The average hiking speed is 2 km per hour. This tour will take about 4 hours.
We drive to Halldórsvíkar and park the car in the northern most part of the village, at a large rock quarry. The tour ends in the center of the village when we get back down where a large river is found and follow the village traile down to the road.
Skúgvur (the bird):
It is especially when the bird begin hatching in late july that the birds are most agressive. They will fly and dive themselves down onto you, if you get too close to their nesting area. They can even strike you with their legs. This can seem frightning but it is not dangerous. The best course of action is to continue quietly, so that you get away from the nesting area and the hatchlings as fast as possible. Skúgvur nest almost always in wetland areas, so if you want to avoid the bird thugs then stay away from these areas. And keep in mind that the bird parents are just doing what we all would do to defend our own offspring!
