The beautiful memorial stone in Gjógv says everything. Here sits a mother with two children and looks out into the ocean. They are waiting for their father, who is out fishing or sailing. On the memorial, we see the tablets and this is reading done in sorrow. Gjógv has been hit by many disasters on the ocean. Most terrible of these are the days on the 30 April 1870, when the boats of “Fríðríksbáturin” and “Rættabáturin” were lost along with 16 men, and the 20 Mars 1884, when 8 men were lost along with the boat “Samløgubátinum.”
